DESPINA NICOLAOU 

B.Med.Sci. (Hons) Orthoptics; M.Med.Sci. Orthoptics

Despina Nicolaou, studied at Sheffield University, England, where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Orthoptics (with Honours), and a Master’s degree of medical sciences in Orthoptics.

She worked in the world-renowned eye specialist hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, for seven years, where she gained specialist experience in the most complicated paediatric and adult strabismus cases. She has a particular interest in testing and monitoring vision in infants and children with poor visual function.

She also worked in parallel for three years at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, where she examined patients with brain tumours and traumatic brain injury affecting visual function.In that context she was involved in the investigation and management of patients with various neurological disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsonian syndromes and Myasthenia Gravis.

Despina is qualified to teach orthoptic students in accordance with the British and Irish Orthoptic Society standards. She is experienced in teaching Orthoptics to ophthalmologists, neurologists and other health care professionals. She attended international Ophthalmology conferences and presented the following research papers:

1. Visual Vertigo: The prevalence and classification of binocular vision abnormalities.
